For five children starting out at the prestigious Atwood School in San Francisco, the social status that goes along with being a student there is far from their young minds. Gabby, Andy, Izzie, Billy, and Sean enter kindergarten at the same time at Atwood and the friendship they develop takes them all the way through their high school years. The bond and attraction is immediate and they soon find themselves known as the “Big Five”.
With bright young minds and ambitious goals, these five young people share growing pains on many levels throughout their school years. As Steel describes what problems they must deal with, she also includes the personal home lives of each of them. Many emotions, some very touching and poignant moments, as well as heartbreaking ones, allows each of them to come to understand what friendship really means. Steel deals with the reality of family life in modern times and how the children’s lives are affected as a result of all this. What ever they must face in the future, these five young people make an agreement to remain Friends Forever.
As with most of Steel’s books, FRIENDS FOREVER is an easy, quick read but one that deals with the kind of love that surrounds a wonderful friendship rather than a romantic plot line. Her well developed characters are clearly fleshed out and that allows readers to keep the stories of each character straight even though they all intertwine in different ways eventually. As a fan from way back, I was happy to read a new book by Danielle Steel that had a different tone to it and one that seemed to deal more with social issues in the narrative rather than just a romance. FOREVER FRIENDS is just out and I predict it will be a big success.
