Dear Reader,
When I began writing the Cats in Trouble Mysteries in 2009, I knew my inspiration would be my lifelong love affair with cats. Ever since I was a child and chased my grandparents black cat through their house from the minute I arrived until my parents dragged me to the car to go home, I have adored cats. But my parents were “dog people.” Don’t get me wrong. I love dogs, have always owned one and right now have a wonderful, crazy little sweetheart named Rosie.
Cats, however, are extra-special to me.
The trio of felines in my books do not talk, and yet, with their cat skills alone, they are able to help solve the mysteries quilter Jillian Hart finds herself involved in. My own cats have helped solve a mystery or two themselves. Like the time the hamster escaped and was hiding inside the cold air return vent. There was a cat just waiting patiently for that hamster to emerge. Okay, maybe the intent wasn’t quite to “rescue” said hamster. But I sure knew where our little rodent was hiding!
You may be wondering why, when I live in Texas, I set a series in a fictional town in South Carolina. A few years ago, my husband and I bought property in South Carolina on a lake very similar to the lake Jillian lives on. Her hometown will soon be my hometown—except we will be living in Greenwood, not Mercy, South Carolina.
When I started this mystery, the idea was to write about a woman who knits and loves cats and just happens to solve mysteries, but since I am a longtime quilter myself, I suggested to my editor that a quilter would be a better choice for a heroine. I know a tiny bit about knitting, though not enough to ever make readers believe I know how to make anything but a scarf. Added to that, quilting is like puzzle-making. Mysteries are puzzle-solving. To me, the two seemed a natural fit.
My heroine, Jillian, makes quilts for cats—because any cat lover knows how much their fur-friends adore fabric. And because this idea came from my imagination, I had to make sure I knew about these little quilts, so I made a few. Yes, my own cats love them. No surprise.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this little bit of inside information about the Cats in Trouble Mysteries and the fourth installment, THE CAT, THE WIFE AND THE WEAPON will help you escape with Jillian and her three best friends—Syrah, Merlot and Chablis. (My fictional cats, not the wine!)
Happy Reading!
