WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S" ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S
AUDIO BOOK CHOICE.....
BY LISA SCOTTOLINE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Lisa Scottoline has delivered taut thrillers with a powerful emotional wallop in her New York Times bestsellers Save Me, Think Twice, and Look Again. Now, with her new novel, Come Home, she ratchets up the suspense with the riveting story of a mother who sacrifices her future for a child from her past.
Jill Farrow is a typical suburban mom who has finally gotten her and her daughter's lives back on track after a divorce. She is about to remarry, her job as a pediatrician fulfills her---though it is stressful---and her daughter, Megan, is a happily over-scheduled thirteen-year-old juggling homework and the swim team.
But Jill’s life is turned upside down when her ex-stepdaughter, Abby, shows up on her doorstep late one night and delivers shocking news: Jill’s ex-husband is dead. Abby insists that he was murdered and pleads with Jill to help find his killer. Jill reluctantly agrees to make a few inquiries and discovers that things don’t add up. As she digs deeper, her actions threaten to rip apart her new family, destroy their hard-earned happiness, and even endanger her own life. Yet Jill can’t turn her back on a child she loves and once called her own.
Come Home reads with the breakneck pacing of a thriller while also exploring the definition of motherhood, asking the questions: Do you ever stop being a mother? Can you ever have an ex-child? What are the limits to love of family?
EXCERPT FROM COME HOME:
Jill stopped on the stairway, listening. She thought she heard a voice calling her from outside, but she’d been wrong before. It was probably the rushing of the rain, or the lash of the wind through the trees. Still, she listened, hoping.
“Babe?” Sam paused on the stair, resting his hand on the banister. He looked back at her, his eyes a puzzled blue behind his glasses. “Did you forget your phone?”
“No, I thought I heard something.” Jill didn’t elaborate. She was in her forties, old enough to have a past and wise enough to keep her thoughts about it to herself.
“What?” Sam asked, patiently. It was almost midnight, and they’d been on their way to bed. The house was dark except for the glass fixture above the stairwell, and the silvery strands in Sam’s thick, dark hair glinted in the low light. Their chubby golden retriever, Beef, was already upstairs, looking down at them from the landing, his buttery ears falling forward.
“It’s nothing, I guess.” Jill started back up the stairs, but Beef swung his head toward the front of the house and gave an excited bark. His tail started to wag, and Jill turned, too, listening again.
Jill! Jill!
“It’s Abby!” Jill heard it for sure, this time.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Lisa Scottoline‘s COME HOME starts out as an important book that addresses the social issue of today’s many blended families but quickly becomes much more than that as is turns into a thrill ride like you can’t believe! I loved the way Scottoline builds suspense in this novel while all the while is drawing the reader in with such well written characters for the reader to care about. I listened long into the night as I hated to stop the audio book so would listen to just one more chapter that, of course, led to many more!
COME HOME is the story of Jill Farrow, a dedicated pediatrician, who has a 13-year-old daughter, Megan, from her deceased first husband. Her second marriage ended in divorce as William proved to be a cheat and left, forbidding his two daughters to have anything to do with their stepmother. The girls, Abby and Victoria, had come to love Jill as much as she had loved them in return. Although she misses those girls, Jill thinks she finally has her life in order now as she looks at her upcoming marriage to Sam, who is all she could want in a husband, as well as father for Megan.
When the story opens, former stepchild Abby literally stumbles back into Jill’s life late one night to tell her William, her dad, had died. It was supposedly a suicide but Abby is convinced that it was murder and asks for Jill’s help. Sam is not accepting of Abby and her antics as the story goes on as he sees what it is doing to Jill and Megan. Victoria, Abby’s sister, wants nothing to do with Jill and that just adds to the emotional confusion. Victoria doesn’t believe Abby and honestly has no use for her or for Jill. When Jill decides to just check out a few things from Abby’s story, all the players come down on her and the emotional roller coaster begins. Along with that, William’s death does look more and more suspicious and so the mystery is now in full swing as far as Jill is concerned.
Despite all the warnings, Jill continues to investigate and comes to find out that there was so much more to William than any of them suspected. She also starts to realize that there are others who don’t want her in on this investigation besides her family and stepdaughter. Jill’s life is turned totally upside down in what I have to say is some of the BEST twists and turns in a mystery I have read in a very long time. Lisa Scottoline has given new meaning to the word thriller. I also want Ms. Scottoline to know that she caused me several disappointments during the mystery as I was SURE I had guessed who was doing what several times only to be wrong as things shifted once more.
COME HOME is a double bonus as it is not only a thrilling mystery but also a wonderful story of relationships and just what a caring mother will do to help her child, or her stepchild! COME HOME would be a wonderful book club choice as there is so much discussion that can come from it and I, for one, can’t wait to recommend it to my group next time!
