AGAINST THE EDGE
Raines Of Wind Canyon Series, #8
BY KAT MARTIN
ABOUT THE BOOK:
A child he's never met. A danger he's never known.
That he's a father is news former navy SEAL Ben Slocum was not expecting. But once the initial shock wears off for the confirmed bachelor, he takes in the rest of what social worker Claire Chastain tells him: that his son is missing, abducted by a man who wants revenge against Claire and Sam's dead mother. And that Ben is now the child's only hope.
As Ben and Claire band together to track the two down, their concern for Sam draws them closer, each fighting feelings there's no time to explore. Because when their search takes them too close to Sam's abductor and his cohorts, the danger hits home—the son he's desperate to save, the woman he's desperate to love…. Ben's got one chance to take back what's his, and in one gunshot he could lose it all.

For New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin, a career in real estate led her down the road to romance.
Through real estate, Kat found her own perfect match—her husband, Western author Larry Jay Martin.
"We were on opposing sides of a transaction—I represented the seller and he represented the buyer," Kat recalls.
A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author!
"It was quite a romantic story," she admits. "I'd still like to see it get published." Then, after doing some editing for her future husband, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing.
Kat moved on to become the bestselling author of over thirty historical and contemporary romance novels. To date, 10 million copies of her books are in print, and she's been published around the globe, including Germany, Norway, Sweden, China, Korea, Bulgaria, Russia, England, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Argentina and Greece.
When she's not writing, Kat also enjoys skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe. Currently, she's busy writing her next book.
AN EXCERPT FROM AGAINST THE EDGE:
Houston, Texas
H is head was pounding. Too much Jack Daniel's last night. When Ben Slocum pulled his big black SUV into the driveway in front of his garage, the only thing on his mind was getting a couple hours of sleep.
Reaching up to hit the garage door opener on his visor, he spotted a silver Buick with Hertz rental plates parked in front of the house. His gaze swung to the porch, where a woman in a conservative yellow business suit stood rapping on his door.
Ben groaned. Last night two of his best friends, Alex Justice and Sabrina Eckhart, had gotten married. Alex, one of his fellow private investigators at Atlas Security, had fallen hard for the pretty redhead. Ben had never seen a guy look happier about getting hitched.
Their early-October wedding had turned into good news for Ben, who'd gotten lucky with a slinky little blonde from Dallas he had met at the reception. He'd spent the night in her bed at the Marriott, and neither of them had gotten much sleep.
Still dressed in his black tuxedo, Ben glanced at the porch, shoved the Denali into Park and turned off the engine, cracked open the door and slid out from behind the wheel. His pants were wrinkled, his white pleated shirt haphazardly buttoned and opened halfway down the front. His black bow tie hung loose around his collar.
Company this morning was the last thing he wanted.
He took a long look at the woman whose attention was now fixed on him as he crossed the front lawn. She was tall and slender, with dark brown hair clipped back at the nape of her neck, and a very pretty face. High cheekbones, a heart-shaped face and full lips. Too bad they were currently thinned in a disapproving line.
He wondered what she was selling. Whatever it was, he wasn't buying.

SOME OTHER BOOKS BY KAT MARTIN...HOW MANY HAVE YOU READ?

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Kat Martin’s latest in the “Raines of Wind Canyon” Series, AGAINST THE EDGE, is a suspenseful thriller that stands quite well on its own. I can confirm that as I have not read the other books in the series yet I found myself immediately drawn into AGAINST THE EDGE. It kept my attention throughout as I found the characters to be well-developed and easy to relate to. With as much emotional fervor as there was action, AGAINST THE EDGE gives the narrative an “edge” while also keeping readers emotionally invested.
When social worker Claire Chastain enters former Navy SEAL turned Private Investigator, Ben Slocum’s life, little do either of them realize where this meeting will take them, physically and emotionally. Claire’s good friend, Laura has died, leaving Claire to care for her nine year old son Sam. However, the court rules against that and Sam winds up in foster care. While Claire works to change that, Sam goes missing and Claire must find him. The court and foster parents think Sam has run away but Claire is convinced that Laura’s former nasty and unpredictable boyfriend has taken Sam. When Laura had left him, he blamed Claire and was crazy mad at them both. There is only one place Claire can turn and that is to Ben Slocum, Sam‘s biological father.
Ben is shocked to find out he is a father. Laura hurt him years ago and ever since, he has had no interest in any real relationship with a woman. However, finding out he is a father and that his son is in danger, quickly brings out the paternal side of Ben. He bands with Claire to find Sam before it is too late. While they try to find and rescue Sam, the action builds along with the feelings Claire and Ben have for each other. Will Ben and Claire find Sam before it is too late? Will their relationship flourish, or is it just a passing fancy? Read Kat Martin’s newest book, AGAINST THE EDGE to find out.
