BRUNCH WITH BINGO: SIX SISTERS' STUFF BLOG TOUR: A REVIEW AND SPECIAL GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
JOIN THE DINNER CHALLENGE
According to Pew Research , only about half of families make dinner a daily ritual and another third eat together a few times a week. Roughly one in 5 families (20%) eat together only occasionally or never.  In conjunction with the book’s release, on  March 4, 2013, SixSistersStuff.com will launch a 4x4 Dinner Challenge. Families are encouraged to eat together as a family at least four times a week for four weeks.

Families can register online at www.SixSistersStuff.com and receive meal tips, ideas for family activities, and helpful recipes to assist in making this challenge a reality.  “We grew up knowing the importance of feeding our families a home-cooked meal and sitting down to eat it together,” said Camille, the oldest sister.  “Even the busiest of people can make the food and project ideas we share, which will give you even more time to spend with your family and loved ones.”

See more about an EXTRA WAY TO WIN this book at the bottom of this post.

SIX SISTERS' STUFF
Family Recipes, Fun Crafts, and So Much More!

ABOUT THE BOOK:
The authors of Six Sisters’ STUFF teach families just how simple putting dinner on the table can be. This beautifully designed full-color book provides a collection of over 80 simple recipes, crafts and ideas that will help busy parents and families spend less time cooking in the kitchen and more time creating lasting memories together.

In their debut cookbook, the sisters (yes, six biological sisters— Camille, Kristen, Elyse, Stephanie, Lauren, and Kendra) show families just how simple putting dinner on the table can be.  From Baked Chicken Fajitas to Slow Cooker Pot Roast Sliders to Mini Oreo Cheesecakes, Six Sisters’ Stuff has nearly 100 easy-to-follow recipes that use ingredients commonly found in your pantry.  Each recipe includes easy-to-follow instructions and photographs that eliminate any guess work.

Six Sisters’ Stuff also includes a collection of simple and inexpensive craft ideas – how to make hand puppets, felt bows, decorative wreaths, and more – plus lists of fun family activities for road trips, entertaining rainy-day ideas, healthy snack suggestions, and even some recommendations for cheap date nights. This family-focused cookbook is really more of an idea book to help families create fun, lasting memories together.

A SAMPLE RECIPE:

BETTER-THAN-ANYTHING BROWNIES
Ingredients:
1 package German chocolate cake mix
1 (5 3/4 ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (14 ounce) bag caramels
3/4 cup melted butter
1 bag milk chocolate chips
1 (8 ounce) bag Heath toffee bits

Directions:
Mix together cake mix, melted butter and 1/3 cup evaporated milk.  Press 1/2 of mix into a 9 x 13-in. greased pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.  Remove brownies from oven and sprinkle on half the bag of Heath toffee bits.  Melt together caramels and rest of the evaporated milk, pour over toffee bits.  Sprinkle on half the bag of chocolate chips.  Spread the remaining batter on top (this is easiest if you take pieces of the batter, flatten each individual piece in your hands and place on top).  Sprinkle remaining toffee bits and chocolate chips on top.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.  Refrigerate for 3 hours before serving. - See more at: http://www.sixsistersstuff.com/2012/07/better-than-anything-brownies-recipe.html#sthash.cRaDtpyi.dpuf

A SAMPLE CRAFT:

RUFFLES AND YARN FALL WREATH
Here is what you need:
-Skein of yarn (mine was 165 yards long and I used almost all of it)
-Foam wreath form (mine was a 14" wreath from Hobby Lobby)
-1/2 yard of felt
-Scissors
-Needle and thread
-Hot glue

- The first thing that you will want to do is wrap your wreath. I just put a little dot of hot glue on the back, glued the end of the yarn down, and just started wrapping. It took about 30 minutes (I went around the whole wreath twice). I used another little dot of hot glue to hold the end down when I was finished.
Next, cut your felt.
-I had three strips of felt: 6"x 24", 4.5"x 24", and 2.5" x 24".
-If you want smaller or larger ruffles, adjust the width accordingly.
-Lay the three strips on top of each other (the largest one on the bottom) and using your needle and thread, sew a simple running stitch down the middle.
- As you sew, cinch your material so that it is ruffled (it is much easier to do this as you go instead of at the end because the felt is so thick and the thread that I used wasn't strong enough . . . I suggest using the thickest thread you can find!).
-Keep sewing and cinching as you go . . . it doesn't really matter if the ends aren't ruffled- but make sure that the middle is ruffled.
-When you reach the end of the felt, cinch it as tight/ruffly as you want and tie a knot so that it will stay in place.
- Now all that you have to do is wrap your ruffle around the wreath where you want it and glue it in place! I went crazy with the glue so that ruffle isn't going anywhere! To see more details for this project, you can visit the Six Sisters' Stuff blog HERE.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
SIX SISTERS’ STUFF: FAMILY RECIPES, FUN CRAFTS, AND SO MUCH MORE from Shadow Mountain books is SO MUCH fun! I must have been on another planet and guess hadn’t heard about these special siblings up until just before I got the book when a friend posted a recipe of theirs. Then I got this amazing book and have to say, even if you don’t cook or craft, this is one fabulous and entertaining read. Not only are the recipes simply written (and also many are really easy), but they are accompanied by mouth watering photographs. The crafts are explained with words and step-by-step pictures and there are so many I want to try that I don’t know where to start.

As the sisters say in their introduction, the importance of family is something they grew up with and want to pass that along to their readers. This is obvious by their interest in promoting families eat dinner together with their current “Dinner Challenge”. They created their book in order to help busy parents and folks make wonderful things to decorate their homes, have fun with, and eat.

The recipes are divided into Main Dishes, Slow Cooker, Sides, Salads, Breads, and Desserts. There are about 12 easy to follow crafts as well. But I think my favorite part is the “And So Much More” sections. These are articles and tips to help make life easier and more pleasurable. An example that I liked immediately was “Build Your 72-Hour Kit in 52 Weeks”. When gathering things for emergencies, it can often be a daunting tasks, especially when you need several of each thing for every family member. They break it down to have you do one thing a week and after that one year, yours are all complete. Of course, if you want, they suggest doing a few a week and being done sooner which is quite feasible as so many are very easy to do. I also liked the “Spring Cleaning Checklist” because it made me think of things I never had thought of before.

The three sections of the book are intermingled so that a food section is followed by a craft and/or an article. I enjoyed just reading the book. I skimmed all the recipes and do admit I read the majority of crafts but didn’t miss one single “extra” article. SIX SISTERS’ STUFF is not only fun to read but really well planned out and gorgeous to look at. I’m betting this will be one we will all keep on our shelf and refer to a lot even after we read it.
