Along with best-selling author Mindy Starns Clark, Kim's new book Beauty to Die For: A Spa Mystery introduces us to Juliette Taylor, a fictional former supermodel who co-owns a beauty line. But when Juliette's products are the victim of a counterfeit scheme, it sets into motion a sinister chain of events.
When Juliette arrives at the Palm Grotto Spa to host a spiritual retreat for women, she runs into an old modeling colleague, Raven, who had always been disliked in the industry. Demanding and rude, Raven doesn't have a lot of fans at the spa, either.
When Raven makes a cryptic threat to Juliette and is then found dead, hours later suspicion is directed at Juliette. Juliette has a rocky history with Raven, and certainly knows how to use beauty products Š but for murder?!
Now, Juliette must find the actual killer before the police really take care of her.
KIM ALEXIS
Kim Alexis was born and reared in upstate New York. Always competitive, Kim was deeply involved in junior high and high school athletics, and is a marathoner. She originally had planned a career in pharmacology. At the age of 18, she was "discovered" by the Elite Talent Agency. She soon moved to New York City and thus began an unbelievable career in the modeling industry.
Alexis was one of the top models of the 1980's, identified along with Gia Carangi, Carol Alt, Christie Brinkley, Kelly Emberg, Iman, and Paulina Porizkova. In 1983 she became the face of Revlon's premium Ultima II line, replacing Lauren Hutton. She was featured in countless TV and print ads, and graced the cover of over 500 magazines, not to mention six appearances in the coveted Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues. In fact, it's as though the term "supermodel" was coined to describe her.
KIM ALEXIS has been the spokesperson for other iconic American beauty brands, such as Tiffany Perfume, Fitness Quest, and many more. Her desire is to encourage other women to be their best in all areas of life, from health, to beauty, to spirituality. MINDY STARNS CLARK
Mindy Starns Clark is the best-selling author of the Million Dollar Mysteries, Smart Chick Mysteries, and The Women of Lancaster County book series and other books. A former singer and stand-up comedian, Mindy is a crowd favorite at speaking engagements around the country. She lives with her husband and children near Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Kim Alexis and Mindy Starns Clark have come up with BEAUTY TO DIE FOR, a new Spa Mystery, and it is a great way to end those summer time blues. Centered on main character Juliette Taylor, the story reveals how this former supermodel who you would think has it all is still a lonely lady. Years ago, while stuck in an airport thanks to weather delays, Juliette is captivated when she meets young Marcus Stone. They wind up spending their time having an enlightening discussion about their lives and goals. By the time they parted, they had motivated each other to take that next step toward the dream they wanted to pursue. Marcus promised Juliette that he would find his happiness and then come back for her.
Juliette indeed went on to be a supermodel and as she beautifully aged, she expanded her talents and created a line of facial products and cosmetics. She is heading for the Palm Grotto Spa in California for a retreat her company is sponsoring. The company has had publicity problems of late as imitation products have been circulating giving the company bad press and reputation. Also on the way, Juliette runs into a former rival model, Raven, who had the reputation of being a bit of diva and doesn’t seem to have changed. She also is going to the Spa much to Juliette’s regret.
Marcus Stone did not forget Juliette and in fact, once he was successfully on his way, discovered she was engaged and so he didn’t want to interfere. She comes back into his life just when he finished a top secret job with the FBI and discovers Juliette’s name on the terrorists’ cell phone records! Looking into her life now, he finds she never did marry and is on her way to a retreat at a Spa. With the help of his mother, Marcus heads to the Spa to “treat his mom” to a nice time in hopes of running into Juliette.
However, what appears to be simply a sweet love story suddenly takes a turn as Raven is discovered dead at the spa in a treatment room. On top of that, she was supposedly using some of Juliette’s company’s products. Were they meant for Raven or for Juliette…or perhaps to once more ruin Juliette’s company name? As the suspense builds, of course, Marcus enters the picture and the mystery keeps you guessing while being wound around a budding romance revisited.
The romantic, mystifying storyline is well done with interesting characters and enough twists and turns to keep mystery fans satisfied. I also liked that this sometimes called Christian Mystery was very enjoyable and not preaching.
