MY CROSS TO BEAR - A MEMOIR BY GREGG ALLMAN: REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:01 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
MY CROSS TO BEAR
BY GREGG ALLMAN
with Alan Light
ABOUT THE BOOK:
As one of the greatest rock icons of all time, Gregg Allman has lived it all and then some. For almost fifty years, he's been creating some of the most recognizable songs in American rock, but never before has he paused to reflect on the long road he's traveled. Now, he tells the unflinching story of his life, laying bare the unvarnished truth about his wild ride that has spanned across the years.

The story begins simply: with Gregg and his older brother, Duane, growing up in the South, raising hell with their guitars, and drifting from one band to another. But all that changed when Duane and Gregg came together with four other men to forge something new—a unique sound shaped by soul, rock, and blues and brimming with experimentation; a sound not just of a band, but of a family.

Bringing to life the carefree early days of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg holds nothing back—from run-ins with the law to meeting girls on the road, from jamming at the Fillmore East to experimenting with drugs. Along the way, he goes behind the scenes of some of greatest rock music ever recorded, without shying away from the infamous and painful deaths of his brother, Duane, and Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley. Speaking for the first time about the profound impact that his brother's death had on him, Gregg offers a tribute to Duane that only a younger brother could write, showing how, to this day, he still confronts the grief of losing his big brother, even as Duane continues to guide and inspire him.

Setting the record straight about the band's struggles in the face of death, Gregg shows how the decision to persevere came with a heavy price. While the rock and roll excesses of drugs, alcohol, and personality clashes led to a series of breakups that culminated with the band's permanent reunion in 1989, Gregg fought his own battle with substance abuse, going to rehab no less than eleven times and floating through a string of failed marriages, including his tabloid-frenzied relationship with Cher, before finally cleaning up once and for all.

Capturing the Allman Brothers' ongoing, triumphant resurgence as well as his own recent fight against hepatitis C, Gregg presents a story as honest as it is fascinating, providing a glimpse inside one of the most beloved and notorious bands in the history of rock music and demonstrating how, through it all, the road goes on . . . forever.

PRAISE FOR MY CROSS TO BEAR:
In his memoir, the rambling and rambunctious Gregg Allman lays bare his soul… In the end, Allman, writing with music journalist Light, has produced a fiercely honest memoir.
— Publishers Weekly (starred review)
This is a story about musical brotherhood. Rich and moving... Nothing less than profound. Life, love and music from one of the most influential American recording artists of the last 40 years.— Kirkus Reviews
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Gregg Allman is one of the original members of the Allman Brothers Band and a legend of American music. A recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and continues to make music as a solo artist and with the Allman Brothers. A multiple Grammy Award winner, he has sold millions of records around the world, with his most recent album, Low Country Blues, debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard chart. He lives in Georgia. Alan Light is a frequent contributor to Rolling Stone and the New York Times. The former editor-in-chief of Spin and Vibe magazines, he is a two-time winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for excellence in music writing.  MY VERY PERSONAL THOUGHTS/REVIEW:MY CROSS TO BEAR is the compassionate and candid memoir by Gregg Allman. Allman is one of the most legendary American recording artists of the last four decades along with being a well deserved member of the Rock ‘n‘ Roll Hall of Fame. As a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg decided after years of so many unauthorized reports and rumors that he was at a place in his life where he was ready to set things straight.

In MY CROSS TO BEAR, I found Gregg’s narrative very much like one might feel were they just sitting around with him and listening to him talk to you about his life. Facing the essence of his past head on, Allman doesn’t shy away from anything or anybody. Complete with the “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll” that include his addiction to alcohol and drugs, his numerous marriages, and enough fodder to fill any tabloid, Gregg Allman of course talks about the loss of his older brother, Duane Allman, and friend Berry Oakley, the band’s bassist. These losses shaped the man that Allman has become as well as the life he has lived. With fame and fortune, the ups and downs are many and often amazing to believe Gregg survived. It seems incredible when reading about Gregg’s many health issues including his liver transplant, that he is still here to tell this amazing story.

The Allman Brother is never far from discussing his love of music and how his special musical genre incorporates blues, jazz, as well as rock (often referred to as Southern Rock). The story of how the brothers started out having lost their father at a very early age and being raised by his beloved mother, Gregory as his good friends call him, writes about the brothers' passage from that first guitar to their local fame starting in the late 1960s, growing up in Daytona Beach, there is more than just that one connection that made this a very special memoir for me to read. With my husband also playing in a local band during that same time period as when Duane and Gregg were getting started, it was so interesting to read how Gregg wrote about people, places, and events we personally know about. In fact, the “foot shooting party” is one that my husband attended, as he and the Allman brothers ran in some of the same circles due to their shared musical interests. Also, at least two of the clubs that Gregg played at were owned by my parents. Although the name of the owner is not correct in the book (which I can only assume is due to memory loss over the years, or incorrect research from an assistant), I can remember like it was yesterday how my mother was never pleased when Gregg came to sit in with the band in our club/bar. We would laugh at her because she was running a bar, my dad would tell her, not a church. However, she was always very traditional and not into the long hair and outfits that Gregg and other rock groups wore. Her “soul/R&B group” always wore matching outfits which she liked much more. So these personal experiences about Gregg made this memoir that much more interesting for me to read.

I think most memorable is the way Gregg Allman describes his love for his brother. Duane has been recognized as one of the most gifted guitar players of all time and to think he died at the age of 24 has to make one wonder just how much he would have accomplished had he not died in that tragic accident. I found Gregg’s reflections on this subject to be honest and heartfelt. It is hard not to feel Duane’s influence throughout this amazing memoir. MY CROSS TO BEAR is going to surprise many who read it, I believe, because of how well written and interesting it is whether you are a fan or not. From the Allman Joys to Fillmore East, from Cher to the “Big House” museum in Georgia, MY CROSS TO BEAR is one honestly delightful memoir not to be missed. The “rambling man” tells it like it is and if you aren’t a fan already, you will be as you will see why Gregg writes, “Music is my life’s blood”.

PUMPED FOR MURDER
A Dead-End Mystery
BY ELAINE VIETS
ABOUT THE BOOK:
The latest Dead-End Job mystery from the national bestselling author of Half-Priced Homicide.

Helen Hawthorne and her new hubby Phil have opened their own P.I. agency and their very first client is Shelby, who thinks her husband is developing a killer body for another woman.

To keep track of the suspected cheater, Helen gets a dead-end job at Fantastic Fitness, where she has to pump iron to stay employed. Then the budding agency takes on a murder case, and Helen has to move her workouts to the early morning just to keep up. With so much weight on her aching shoulders, will Helen catch a killer-or just drop dead from exhaustion?

EXCERPT FROM PUMPED FOR MURDER:
Helen Hawthorne wished Eric Clapton would shut up. She didn’t want to listen to him croon about cocaine.

“She don’t lie, she don’t lie . . .” Eric sang.

Enough, Helen thought. She sat up in bed and pulled the black satin

sheet up to prepare for the first fight of her marriage. She didn’t want to be totally naked.

Phil, her husband of thirty-three days, looked lean and white against the dark sheets. She admired his young face, a startling contrast to his silver-white hair. His eyes were closed as he listened to the music.

Here goes, Helen thought. As soon as I open my mouth, our honeymoon is over. But she couldn’t stop herself.

“I hate that song,” she said. “Clapton sounds bored.”

Helen waited for Phil to defend his guitar hero. He gave a lazy stretch, sat up and said, “You’re right.”

“I am?” Helen raised one eyebrow in surprise.

ARE YOU LISTENING? AGENT 6 - AN AUDIO BOOK PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S"
ARE YOU LISTENING? DAY"

I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S

AUDIO BOOK CHOICE.....
 GIVEAWAY ENDED
AGENT SIX
BY TOM ROB SMITH
READ BY DENNIS BOUTSIKARIS
ABOUT THE BOOK:
THREE DECADES.
TWO MURDERS.
ONE CONSPIRACY.

WHO IS AGENT 6?
Tom Rob Smith's debut, Child 44, was an immediate publishing sensation and marked the arrival of a major new talent in contemporary fiction. Named one of top 100 thrillers of all time by NPR, it hit bestseller lists around the world, won the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and the ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel, and was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize.
In this spellbinding new novel, Tom Rob Smith probes the tenuous border between love and obsession as Leo Demidov struggles to untangle the threads of a devastating conspiracy that shatters everything he holds dear. Deftly capturing the claustrophobic intensity of the Cold War-era Soviet Union, it's at once a heart-pounding thriller and a richly atmospheric novel of extraordinary depth....

AGENT 6
Leo Demidov is no longer a member of Moscow's secret police. But when his wife, Raisa, and daughters Zoya and Elena are invited on a "Peace Tour" to New York City, he is immediately suspicious.

Forbidden to travel with his family and trapped on the other side of the world, Leo watches helplessly as events in New York unfold and those closest to his heart are pulled into a web of political conspiracy and betrayal-one that will end in tragedy.

In the horrible aftermath, Leo demands only one thing: to investigate the killer who destroyed his family. His request is summarily denied. Crippled by grief and haunted by the need to find out exactly what happened on that night in New York, Leo takes matters into his own hands. It is a quest that will span decades, and take Leo around the world-from Moscow, to the mountains of Soviet-controlled Afghanistan, to the backstreets of New York-in pursuit of the one man who knows the truth: Agent 6.

A DOG'S JOURNEY
Another Novel for Humans
BY W. BRUCE CAMERON
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Buddy is a good dog.

After searching for his purpose through several eventful lives, Buddy is sure that he has found and fulfilled it. Yet as he watches curious baby Clarity get into dangerous mischief, he is certain that this little girl is very much in need of a dog of her own.

When Buddy is reborn, he realizes that he has a new destiny. He's overjoyed when he is adopted by Clarity, now a vibrant but troubled teenager. When they are suddenly separated, Buddy despairs—who will take care of his girl?

A charming and heartwarming story of hope, love, and unending devotion, A Dog's Journey asks the question: Do we really take care of our pets, or do they take care of us? More than just another endearing dog tale, A Dog's Journey is the moving story of unwavering loyalty and a love that crosses all barriers.

PRAISE FOR A DOG'S JOURNEY:
“An amazing book. I laughed and smiled and cried. Wise…and sure to open the hearts of all who read it. Bailey has much to teach us about a dog’s love of liberty."
—Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Color Purple

"I loved the book and I could not put it down. It really made me think about the purpose of life. At the end, I cried."
—Temple Grandin, New York Times bestselling author of Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human

"Marley & Me combined with Tuesdays With Morrie."  —Kirkus Reviews

“Funny, heartwarming, and touching.”  —Library Journal (starred review)

AN EXCERPT FROM A DOG'S JOURNEY:
As I sat in the sun on the wooden dock that jutted out into the pond, I knew this to be true: my name was Buddy, and I was a good dog.

The fur on my legs was as black as the rest of me, but down at my paws it had, over time, become tinged with white. I had lived a long and full life with a boy named Ethan, spending many lazy afternoons on this very dock, here on the Farm, enjoying a swim or barking at the ducks.

This was the second summer without Ethan. When he died I felt a pain inside me much sharper than any other I’d ever felt. Now the pain was less, more like a stomachache, but I still felt it all the time. Only sleep soothed it away—in my sleep, Ethan ran with me through my dreams.

I was an old dog and knew that someday soon a much deeper sleep would come, as it had always come for me before. It came for me when I was named Toby, in my silly first life, when I had no real purpose but to play with other dogs. It came for me when I was named Bailey, when I first met my boy and loving him became my whole focus. It came for me when I was Ellie, when my job was to Work, to Find people, and to Save them. So when the deeper sleep came for me next, at the end of this life, as Buddy, I felt sure that I would not live again, that I had fulfilled my purpose and there was no reason for me to be a dog anymore. So whether it happened this summer or the next didn’t matter. Ethan, loving Ethan, was my ultimate purpose, and I had done it as well as I could. I was a good dog.

And yet …

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Fans of W. Bruce Cameron’s A DOG’S PURPOSE are in for a treat! Cameron now gives readers a sequel in A DOG’S JOURNEY in which that faithful and adorable pup, Buddy, finds his life coming to an end. It is sad to think about but it is the way it goes with the old “circle of life” and all. Buddy is practical about it, as well, and spends the time he has left now with little Clarity, who is his “owner’s” granddaughter.

Buddy is content that he has found his purpose having searched for it in several other exhilarating and fulfilling lives. He feels that he will not be reborn another time after having already lived four other lives. Buddy hopes that Clarity will get another dog because he can tell that she needs some special watching over as she grows. In a sad but expected moment, Buddy slowly feels his body giving in and his spirit leaving.

Buddy goes through all this only to find himself waking up not where he expected to be but rather still on earth. This time Buddy is born again but as a fluffy poodle everyone is calling Molly! Imagine his surprise! Add to it that he is still with Clarity who has certainly grown and now calls herself C. J. She is going through the angst of adolescence and Buddy realizes he came back to her just in time. He intends to help her by guarding her with his heart and soul, only to be separated from her and fear for her future! Will Clarity make it on her own? Will Buddy be able to ever see her and find a way to have his purpose fulfilled once more?

W. Bruce Cameron’s narrative is often funny but sometimes heartbreaking. Readers can feel themselves becoming Buddy with the wonderful description Cameron uses thus creating the perfect mental image for the story of this dog and how he lives this special life. Dog devotees especially will enjoy A DOG’S JOURNEY and for a really relaxing and entertaining time, sit back and listen to it on audio book and find yourself transported to Buddy’s world - a place where man’s best friend is just what is needed to get through some tough times as well as enjoy the highlights of life.
