Check it out for a summary of the book and lots more about Kat Martin!
KAT MARTIN GUEST BLOG POST:
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
In the course of writing more than fifty books, I can tell you that a character’s name can be extremely important.  I spend hours pouring over lists of names:  American, English, Italian, French, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, etc.

Months before I start a story, I work on choosing the right names for my hero and heroine.  It’s my way of getting to know them.  Choosing their names is the way I begin to find their identity.

I like names that evoke an instant picture.  Ben Slocum, for example.  Ben is the hero in AGAINST THE EDGE.  Dark and slightly brooding, Ben’s a hard-edged man who’s been hurt before and is determined to protect his heart and never fall in love again.  I can’t imagine a man named Ben Slocum being a guy with a weak chin.

Jake Cantrell in AGAINST THE SUN stands six feet five inches tall and weighs two-hundred thirty pounds.  Jake is no wimp.  He is a body guard, a former Marine.  His name resonated with me from the moment I said it out loud.

Alex Justice in AGAINST THE ODDS is solid as a rock.  He’s extremely intelligent and though he’s an exceptionally good-looking man, he’s tough when it counts, and wildly protective.

Women’s names are almost as tough to choose.  I find them unconsciously popping into my head as I begin to mentally work on the story.  Sometimes I try to change a name, but it never feels quite right.  Claire Chastain was Claire from the start and I couldn’t make her be anyone else.

I like to choose the names way ahead so that I have a little more input in what they are (as opposed to the character demanding a name and refusing anything else.  Okay, I know that’s crazy, but...)  I try to pick two different first letters so they don’t confuse the reader.  Ben and Claire instead of Ben and Bonnie or something, though occasionally, as I said, a name will come to me so strongly I don’t have any other choice.

I wrote a book called THE DREAM.  I knew it was going to be Jack and Jenny, nothing I could do about it, so I changed the spelling and made it Jack and Genny, and that solved my problem.

I don’t like weird spellings of names.  It bothers the reader the entire length of the book.

As for secondary characters, that’s when it gets to be fun.  The villain in AGAINST THE EDGE uses a number of aliases.  Each one is a clue that leads Ben and Claire closer to finding him.  It’s a wild ride that eventually puts them into a race to survive, a journey that ultimately leads to a powerful love.

I hope you’ll watch for AGAINST THE EDGE and that you enjoy Ben and Claire’s story.

What are some of the names of your favorite heroes and heroines?
Very best and happy reading, kat

DOMESTIC AFFAIRS: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
DOMESTIC AFFAIRS
BY BRIDGET SIEGEL

ABOUT THE BOOK:
A provocative campaign novel—Primary Colors meets The Devil Wears Prada—of a talented and beautiful young politico who falls in love and in bed with the wrong man—the leading presidential candidate.

When twentysomething political fundraiser Olivia Green gets tapped to work on the presidential campaign of Georgia governor, Landon Taylor, it’s her dream job. Her best friend in the world is the campaign manager, and Taylor is a decent, charismatic, and idealist, and he has a real chance to be a great leader. Sacrificing her sleep, comfort, friends, family and income for a year to make the world a better place is the right call, but what happens when both Campaign Lesson #1, No Kissing the Boss, and Lesson #2, Loyalty Above All, go down in flames before the first primary?

Bridget Siegel, veteran of the John Edwards and Obama campaigns, vividly captures the idealism and chaos, as well as the emotional heat and corruption of the candidate’s bubble. What becomes of Olivia’s best friends when she must keep from them the biggest secret of her life? Is the candidate a true romantic or a political hypocrite? How far can she go to justify her happiness?

Told with savvy, humor, and delicious inside-the-Beltway detail, Domestic Affairs is a page-turning tale of love on the campaign trail—and its consequences—from a consummate Beltway insider.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Bridget Siegel, author of Domestic Affairs: A Campaign Novel, has worked on political campaigns at the local, state, and national levels. A graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, she is now an actor, writer, and political consultant. She lives in New York City.

Bridget was only 24 when she raised tens of millions for the 2004 Kerry/Edwards campaign. She also worked on the campaigns of Hillary Clinton, Obama/Biden, and Andrew Cuomo. Now, she brings her experiences on the campaign trail to her debut novel. Can you separate fact from fiction?

Bridget vividly captures the idealism and chaos, as well as the emotional heat and corruption, of the candidate's bubble. Writing with savvy, humor, and delicious inside-the-beltway detail, she brilliantly celebrates and skewers the best and the less in Domestic Affairs.

PRAISE FOR DOMESTIC AFFAIRS:
“The Fifty Shades of Grey of political novels"-- CNN Starting Point

"Bridget Siegel is a true political campaign insider and she has seen it ALL! Her novel, Domestic Affairs, is a fun, provocative read and offers a rare glimpse into what really goes on behind the scenes of political campaigns -- the good, the bad, and everything in between."
-- Terry McAuliffe, formerchair of the Democratic National Committee

"Riveting."-- Lucky

"A gossipy insider's view of a political campaign."
-- Publisher's Weekly

"Bridget Siegel has probably spent too much time in the company of politicians, but her reward was to find enough material to write about her own presidential candidate, an adulterous southerner with major-league hair, impressive blue eyes, and great-sounding empathic ideals -- in other words, someone who couldn't possibly be based on a real person."
-- Jeffrey Frank, author of the Washington Trilogy: The Columnist, Bad Publicity, and Trudy Hopedale

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
I found Bridget Siegel’s novel, DOMESTIC AFFAIRS, to be an enjoyable and quick read. I became very interested in politics, more than usual, since the recent election and when I read the premise of DOMESTIC AFFAIRS I was interested right away. However, do not think you have to be a political type to enjoy this one. It is such a pleasingly light read, that it might even be thought of as political chick-lit.

Bridget Siegel has created the protagonist, Olivia, as one who is very easy to relate to and her story is an engaging one. Using Siegel’s own personal background of working in politics and on campaigns, she adds realism to the well developed characters.  The story is set in New York, however in that Olivia works on a Presidential campaign, her work takes her traveling all over the country.

Olivia is surrounded by characters of all kinds including those who are idealistically working diligently for the cause to those who have a much different agenda. While campaigning across the country in private planes and attending extravagant political fundraising events, Olivia meets up with a vast array of characters. Olivia is working for a fictional (?) Southern governor who has a sincere political philosophy to work for the good of the people. However, his charming personality and magnetic appeal make it easy to see where his roving eye may land on this campaign trail. Olivia’s naïveté and vulnerability leads this idealistic worker right where we might imagine.

Olivia has a friend in Jake, the campaign manager, who is just as drawn in as Olivia is at the start. However, as the story progresses, even the most idealistic of characters would be changed by the goings on. Their disillusionment is real as they begins to witness the change in their candidate. As he begins to believe his own press, the workers rush to deal with how to handle things and whether or not it is time to call it quits. Siegel has given Olivia a real life world to dwell in and makes it a satisfying narrative that you will want to pick up and read on a cool spring afternoon. I don’t think you will be sorry. I know I wasn’t!

   GIVEAWAY ENDED
MRS. JEFFRIES TURNS THE TIDE
A Victorian Mystery
BY EMILY BRIGHTWELL

ABOUT THE BOOK:
If you like Downton Abbey, you’ll love Mrs. Jeffries!

IN THE WEEDS

Beautiful and new in town, Ellen Langston-Jones doesn’t have any enemies. So, when she’s found dead in the communal gardens, Inspector Witherspoon quickly narrows the field of suspects down to one: Lucius Montague, who was seen threatening Mrs. Langston-Jones shortly before her death.

The Inspector and all of London are positive that he’s the killer, but Mrs. Jeffries has doubts. Her biggest problem is that Lucius Montague is a very disagreeable character and no one—including Inspector Witherspoon’s staff—is inclined to save his skin. Now, she must turn the tide of the investigation...or watch an innocent man take the fall for the real killer.

A Mrs. Jeffries Mystery

She keeps house for Inspector Witherspoon...and keeps him on his toes. Everyone’s awed by his Scotland Yard successes—but they don’t know about his secret weapon. No matter how messy the murder or how dirty the deed, Mrs. Jeffries’ polished detection skills are up to the task...proving that behind every great man there’s a woman—and that a crimesolver’s work is never done.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Emily Brightwell was born in West Virginia, the middle sister to Nanette and Linda. Her family moved to Los Angeles in the early sixties, where she graduated from Pasadena High School.

After her high school years, Emily went to California State University Fullerton and earned a Degree in American Studies.

On a visit to England in 1975, one January morning in Leeds, Yorkshire she met the Englishman who would become her husband, Richard. They were married in May 1976 and returned to California in September 1977.

In 1988 Emily decided to try fiction writing and make a new career as a writer.

This was always a dream of hers so she began by writing romances and became a member of the Romance Writers of America. After her entry in the “unpublished authors” contest run by the Orange County chapter of the RWA, was a finalist, she was delighted, but the editor who read my manuscript was scathing in her criticism.

She was crushed for a day or so, but it hardened my resolve to continue writing. It was her very next proposal that sold to Silhouette and was published as a Special Edition under the pen name of Sarah Temple.

Emily wrote two more Special Editions for Silhouette but always wanted to write other kinds of fiction so when her agent asked if she would be interested in writing a Victorian mystery series for Prime Crime she jumped at the chance.

Meet Victorian England’s unusual crime-fighting duo. Inspector Witherspoon doesn’t know how to solve a crime. It’s his housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries, who keeps the inspector on the right track and makes sure that more than the house is running smoothly.

HEADING OUT TO WONDERFUL: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
HEADING OUT TO WONDERFUL
BY ROBERT GOOLRICK

ABOUT THE BOOK:
It is the summer of 1948 when a handsome, charismatic stranger, Charlie Beale, recently back from the war in Europe, shows up in the town of Brownsburg, a sleepy village of a few hundred people, nestled in the Valley of Virginia. All he has with him are two suitcases: one contains his few possessions, including a fine set of butcher knives; the other is full of money. A lot of money.

Finding work at the local butcher shop, Charlie befriends the owner and his family, including the owner's son, Sam, who he is soon treating as though he were his own flesh and blood. And it is through the shop that Charlie gradually meets all the townsfolk, including Boaty Glass, Brownsburg's wealthiest citizen, and most significantly, Boaty's beautiful teenage bride, Sylvan.

This last encounter sets in motion the events that give Goolrick's powerful tale the stark, emotional impact that thrilled fans of his previous novel, A Reliable Wife. Charlie's attraction to Sylvan Glass turns first to lust and then to a need to possess her, a need so basic it becomes an all-consuming passion that threatens to destroy everything and everyone in its path.

Told through the eyes of Sam, now an old man looking back on the events that changed his world forever, Heading Out to Wonderful is a suspenseful masterpiece, a haunting, heart-stopping novel of obsession and love gone terribly wrong in a place where once upon a time such things could happen.

PRAISE FOR HEADING OUT TO WONDERFUL:
“Doesn’t disappoint.”—John Searles, on NBC’s "Today"

“Fans of Goolrick's juicy debut novel A Reliable Wife—which spent 32 weeks on USA Today's Best-Selling Books list—can't wait for this follow-up.”
—USAToday.com

“Deliciously dark and dangerous.”
—O, The Oprah Magazine

“Within the heartbreak of this story, there is joy and beauty . . . In a year when so many of the books I’ve read have been lovely and memorable, Heading Out to Wonderful is my favorite. I could not possibly recommend it or any other book more highly.”
—Literate Housewife

“Goolrick spins out his tale like a mountain ballad . . . Dreamers like Charlie will still try to blunder on to wonderful, and they're the ones whom poets will sing about and old men will remember.”
—Wilmington Star-News

“Robert Goolrick vividly evokes two lovers doomed by their place and their past.”
—Richmond Times-Dispatch

“[A] poetic tale that simmers with foreboding atmosphere.”
—Printers Row magazine, Chicago Tribune

LET'S GET COZY! DEATH COMES SILENTLY: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
DEATH COMES SILENTLY
A Death on Demand Mystery
BY CAROLYN HART

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Winter has arrived in Broward’s Rock, South Carolina, and business has slowed for Annie Darling, owner of mystery bookstore Death on Demand. So when the island’s resident writer publishes the latest in her popular mystery series, Annie jumps at the chance to host a book signing, even though it conflicts with her shift at the local charity shop, Better Tomorrow.

Luckily, fellow volunteer Gretchen Burkholt agrees to sub for her. The signing goes well, but Gretchen interrupts the event multiple times, leaving voice mails about scandalous news she’s dying to share. Even though Gretchen tends to be excitable, Annie heads over to Better Tomorrow, where she finds Gretchen dead on the floor, an axe by her side.

Annie enlists the help of her husband, Max, to piece together a puzzle involving an overturned kayak, a stolen motorboat, a troubled love affair, and a reckless teenager. And she must tread carefully in her investigation, because a killer is on the loose, and that killer works well in the foggy days of winter...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Carolyn Hart was a child in Oklahoma during World War II. She drew on those memories to write her Agatha Award winning LETTER FROM HOME.

Hart's early memories of huge black headlines in the newspapers led her to major in journalism and work briefly as a reporter before turning to fiction. She is the author of 36 mysteries. In LETTER FROM HOME, she explores the impact of a crime on a small Oklahoma town in the summer of 1944 and on the life of 13-year-old Gretchen Gilman.

LETTER FROM HOME was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers and was named a Best Book of 2003 by Publishers Weekly.

An accomplished master of mystery, Carolyn Hart is the author of twenty-one previous Death on Demand novels. Her books have won multiple Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards. She is also the creator of the Henrie O series, featuring a retired reporter, and the Bailey Ruth series, starring an impetuous, redheaded ghost. One of the founders of Sisters in Crime, Hart lives in Oklahoma City.
