MERRY CHRISTMAS,
ALEX CROSS
BY JAMES PATTERSON
REMINDER ABOUT THE BOOK:
It's Christmas Eve and Detective Alex Cross has been called out to catch someone who's robbing his church's poor box. That mission behind him, Alex returns home to celebrate with Bree, Nana, and his children. The tree decorating is barely underway before his phone rings again--a horrific hostage situation is quickly spiraling out of control. Away from his own family on the most precious of days, Alex calls upon every ounce of his training, creativity, and daring to save another family. Alex risks everything--and he may not make it back alive on this most sacred of family days. Alex Cross is a hero for our time, and never more so than in this story of family, action, and the deepest moral choices. MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS will be a holiday classic for years to come.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
When I saw that MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS was written solely by James Patterson AND an Alex Cross book, I was thrilled. I was not let down by this quick read featuring the trademark short chapters, cliffhangers, and action galore. While Cross wants so much to spend the holiday with his wife Bree, the children, and of course, Nana Mama, readers know he will not turn away from calls to help solve extreme crimes. Unfortunately, there are three that take the place of Alex’s peaceful Christmas with his family. The first is minor as a thief is caught stealing money from the poor box at a church. But as Alex rushes back home, readers all know there is more to come. After all, this is Alex Cross!
A whirl wind of two unrelated crimes follows. First when Alex is called away from his festive family celebration, he faces quite the opposite familial scene involving a domestic hostage horror show! Henry Fowler, once at the top of his game as an attorney, is holding his ex-wife and their children, her new husband, and an innocent neighbor, hostages. His life has spiraled out of control and he is now a down-and-out, heavily armed, drug addict. Alex, being a superb mediator, jeopardizes his own life by going into the house to talk the criminal out of his plan. After a risky ploy, following Alex’s skillful negotiating, the situation concludes with Alex able to leave behind another successfully accomplished assignment.
Now, it appears that Cross will be able to enjoy a long-delayed Christmas with his family. And indeed they do, for a short while. Things are barely cleaned up, however, before Cross is again called away. Tired but unable to say no to the FBI, Cross must deal with a terrorist plot that could put millions of people at risk including his own family. It involves a dangerous, radical group and a fanatic Cross has dealt with before, Hala al Dossar. She has been seen carrying a large suspicious bag among the holiday crowd at Union Station. With heart stopping action, Cross and Hala are pitted against each other in the early hours of Christmas morning. With a narrative that is far more involved that Cross can even imagine, the game plays out and Cross must become the victor or the results will be felt around the world.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS is one of Patterson’s most intricate narratives and in being a little too close to reality, one that will capture readers and stay with them for a while. The effect this battle has on Alex Cross makes him that much more of a real life character and one readers can relate to more than ever. I think this is one of Patterson’s best books in a long while and I found myself glued to the audio book CDs where ever I went!
