MERRY CHRISTMAS,
ALEX CROSS
BY JAMES PATTERSON
REMINDER ABOUT THE BOOK:
It's Christmas Eve and Detective Alex Cross has been called out to catch someone who's robbing his church's poor box. That mission behind him, Alex returns home to celebrate with Bree, Nana, and his children. The tree decorating is barely underway before his phone rings again--a horrific hostage situation is quickly spiraling out of control. Away from his own family on the most precious of days, Alex calls upon every ounce of his training, creativity, and daring to save another family. Alex risks everything--and he may not make it back alive on this most sacred of family days. Alex Cross is a hero for our time, and never more so than in this story of family, action, and the deepest moral choices. MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS will be a holiday classic for years to come.
REMINDER ABOUT THE AUTHOR (JUST IN CASE YOU DON'T KNOW HIM):

He writes fulltime and lives in Florida with his family. CRAZY ABOUT JAMES PATTERSON BOOKS?

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
When I saw that MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS was written solely by James Patterson AND an Alex Cross book, I was thrilled. I was not let down by this quick read featuring the trademark short chapters, cliffhangers, and action galore. While Cross wants so much to spend the holiday with his wife Bree, the children, and of course, Nana Mama, readers know he will not turn away from calls to help solve extreme crimes. Unfortunately, there are three that take the place of Alex’s peaceful Christmas with his family. The first is minor as a thief is caught stealing money from the poor box at a church. But as Alex rushes back home, readers all know there is more to come. After all, this is Alex Cross!
A whirl wind of two unrelated crimes follows. First when Alex is called away from his festive family celebration, he faces quite the opposite familial scene involving a domestic hostage horror show! Henry Fowler, once at the top of his game as an attorney, is holding his ex-wife and their children, her new husband, and an innocent neighbor, hostages. His life has spiraled out of control and he is now a down-and-out, heavily armed, drug addict. Alex, being a superb mediator, jeopardizes his own life by going into the house to talk the criminal out of his plan. After a risky ploy, following Alex’s skillful negotiating, the situation concludes with Alex able to leave behind another successfully accomplished assignment.
Now, it appears that Cross will be able to enjoy a long-delayed Christmas with his family. And indeed they do, for a short while. Things are barely cleaned up, however, before Cross is again called away. Tired but unable to say no to the FBI, Cross must deal with a terrorist plot that could put millions of people at risk including his own family. It involves a dangerous, radical group and a fanatic Cross has dealt with before, Hala al Dossar. She has been seen carrying a large suspicious bag among the holiday crowd at Union Station. With heart stopping action, Cross and Hala are pitted against each other in the early hours of Christmas morning. With a narrative that is far more involved that Cross can even imagine, the game plays out and Cross must become the victor or the results will be felt around the world.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALEX CROSS is one of Patterson’s most intricate narratives and in being a little too close to reality, one that will capture readers and stay with them for a while. The effect this battle has on Alex Cross makes him that much more of a real life character and one readers can relate to more than ever. I think this is one of Patterson’s best books in a long while and I found myself glued to the audio book CDs where ever I went!

VANITY FARE
VANITY FARE
A novel of lattes, literature, and love
BY MEGAN CALDWELL
ABOUT THE BOOK:
VANITY FARE is a charming tale of food, family, literature, and romance in which a 40-year-old newly single Brooklyn mother embarks on a culinary writing career and finds herself at the center of a deliciously tempting love triangle. Funny and sweet, Megan Caldwell’s charming romantic novel also includes five delicious recipes developed with the pastry chef from Union Square Café.
Molly Hagan is overwhelmed.
Her husband left her for a younger, blonder woman; her six-year-old son is questioning her authority, and now so is she. In order to pay her Brooklyn rent and keep her son supplied with Pokémon and Legos, not to mention food and clothing, she has to get a job—fast.
So when an old friend offers Molly a freelance position copywriting for a new bakery, finding romance is just about the last thing on her mind. But the sexy British pastry chef who's heading up the bakery has other thoughts. And then so does Molly, when she meets the chef's intimidating business partner—who also happens to have a secret that might prevent Molly from getting her own happily ever after.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I began my writing career at age five, creating a number of Westerns lavishly illustrated with crayon drawings of horses and cowboys. However, I have since moved on to Regency England, an era that has fascinated me ever since I picked up a copy of Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice.
Books have always been an important part of my life. I have always been a voracious reader, and I have always had a very vivid imagination . . . so much so that I think at times it worried my parents that I was so happy in my own little world, drawing pictures and creating stories. My teachers will also tell you that I was the class history geek, even in grade school. I don’t really know why, but I have always been fascinated with the past.
As an undergrad at Yale, I majored in art—though I took enough history courses to have majored in that subject as well—and went on to get a MFA in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art, concentrating in publication design. So I guess you could say I have always had a left brain-right brain sort of love affair with the printed page.
So why did I choose the Regency time period for my mysteries? I love the era because it was such a fabulously interesting time and place—it was a world aswirl in silks, seduction and the intrigue of the Napoleonic Wars. Radical new ideas were clashing with the conventional thinking of the past, and as a result, people were challenging and changing the fundamentals of their society. For example, you had Beethoven composing emotional symphonies, Byron composing wildly romantic poetry about individual angst, J.M.W. Turner dabbling in impressionistic watercolors and Mary Wollstonecraft writing the first feminist manifestos . . .
In so many ways, it was the birth of the modern world, and for me, its challenges, its characters and its conflicts have such relevance to our own times . . . and hey, who can resist men in breeches and boots!
In Lady Arianna Hadley and Allesandro de Quincy, the Earl of Saybrook, I've sought to create two individuals who embody the intellectual curiosity—and courage—of the times. They'll be setting off on some devilishly daunting adventures. So lace up your corsets, tweak the tails of your cravat and let's enter a world of glittering ballrooms and deadly intrigues. Read more about Andrea Penrose at her website HERE.

AN EXCERPT FROM REASON FOR TREASON:
CHAPTER ONE
A jolt of the coach bounced the open book in her lap, rousing Arianna, Lady Saybrook, from a fitful half sleep. Wincing, she shifted against the leather squabs and flexed her aching shoulders.
“Hell,” she muttered as the wheels hit another frozen rut. This was truly the Devil’s own journey.
Though instead of rolling through fire and sulfurous brimstone, they seemed to be entering a bleak realm of ice and frigid vapors. With each passing mile, the landscape looked more and more leached of all color.
Touching her numb fingertips to the page, Arianna couldn’t help but wish that the handwritten recipe for hot Spanish chocolate might transform from ink and paper into a pot of steaming, spice-scented liquid. Despite the fur throw wrapped around her, she was chilled to the bone by the damp cold seeping in through the creaking woodwork.
And the weather looked to be turning worse.

BY AMANDA LEE
