LET'S GET COZY! A WITCH BEFORE DYING: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:01 PM by Unknown

  GIVEAWAY ENDED
A WITCH BEFORE DYING
A Wishcraft Mystery
BY HEATHER BLAKE

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Darcy Merriweather is Salem, Massachusetts’ newest resident Wishcrafter—a witch who can grant wishes for others. While Darcy isn’t able to grant wishes for herself, she does possess a certain knack for solving problems—including the occasional murder…

When Darcy is hired by Elodie Keaton to clean up her missing mother’s disorderly home, the Wishcrafter is certainly up for the task. After all, the motto of her Aunt Ve’s personal concierge service As You Wish is “No Job Impossible.” But beneath the piles of old newspapers and knickknacks Darcy discovers something much more disturbing—Patrice Keaton’s body.

Darcy’s determined to give Elodie peace of mind by investigating her mother’s disappearance and death. Patrice was last seen over a year ago after a fight with her Charmcrafter boyfriend. Was her murder a crime of passion? Or were Patrice’s troubles caused by the Anicula, a wish-granting amulet? Now Darcy has to not only find a killer, she has to find the Anicula— before the power of ultimate wish fulfillment falls into the wrong hands…

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Heather Blake grew up in a suburb of Boston, and enjoys going “home” in her novels. As a young mother, she tried her hand at writing novels and hasn’t looked back. Currently, Heather lives in the Cincinnati area with her family, and is currently hard at work on her next novel.

WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN
The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us
BY RACHELLE BERGSTEIN

ABOUT THE BOOK:
What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, Women from the Ankle Down seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century.

The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoemaker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trendsetter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Fashion aficionado Rachelle Bergstein shares the stories behind these historical moments, interweaving the design innovations and social changes that gave each one its lasting significance and appeal.

Bergstein shows how the story of shoes is the story of women, told from the ankle down. Beginning with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation movement and culminated in the new millennium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, Women from the Ankle Down is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern women and the fashion that reflects—and has shaped—their changing lives.

PRAISE FOR WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN:
“A fleet-footed social history.”
— Liesl Schillinger, New York Times
“[A] lively look at the history of stilettos, sneakers and sundry other leather- and rubber-soled objects of swoon….Chatty yet authoritative.”— Olivia Barker, USA Today “If style defines the woman, and shoes a woman’s style, then ooh la la, here’s the definitive history and guide—everything from Chinese bound feet to Ferragamo, from Hollywood favorites to running up one’s credit card on the sine qua non of fashion.”

— Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don't Get Fat
“If you could glimpse the passing parade of the last hundred years or so from behind a slightly raised curtain, you’d have a pretty good idea of what’s going on in this richly anecdotal history of shoes.”
— Amanda Lovell, More Magazine
“Every woman who loves her shoes should read this book - hell - every man who loves women’s shoes should read this book….Informative, interesting, and just plain fun.”
— New York Journal of Books

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Rachelle Bergstein graduated in 2003 from Vassar College, where she won awards for her academic writing. She works as an editorial consultant for a literary agency in New York City, and her writing has appeared in Fresh Yarn, The Awl, Slice magazine, and The Dirty Durty Diary. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, her cat, and her shoes. This is her first book.

MY THOUGHT/REVIEW:
Women from the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us by Rachelle Bergstein was sheer delight for me. I am a shoe fanatic and love to buy them but mostly can't afford the kind I would love to be wearing. I also love to see who is wearing what and so this book certainly satisfied me on that front.

The book gives a bit of history of shoes for both sexes and how they often reflect a country's style as well as economic and political standing. That sounds very dry but it isn't as Bergstein weaves this all into her story. She writes about the story behind some of the most famous designers like Manolo Blahnik (I own one precious pair I bought on sale) and Ferragamo. The parts about Jimmy Choo, Dior, Stuart Weitzman and others are interesting as she relates how much celebrities and movies can influence what we see and like (and yearn for). Sarah Jessica Parker probably did more for making Manolo Blahnik a household name through her "Sex and the City" movie and shows than anyone else.

Also included is a wealth of facts about current and past celebrities and their influence on shoe styles. Many shoe companies from Reebok to Converse, from Doc Martins to Mary Janes, are discussed and I found them all fascinating. Overall, if you like shoes and/or reading about celebrities as well, than this is a great book for you. It is an easy read and very enjoyable.

I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S

I AM A POLE
(AND SO CAN YOU)
BY STEPHEN COLBERT
READ BY TOM HANKS
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Stephen is excited to celebrate the publication of his first children's book, "I Am a Pole (And So Can You!)." It is the heartfelt tale of a pole searching for truth and meaning in its life and is certainly the most glorious illustrated celebration of pole opportunities available anywhere in hardcover!

Maurice Sendak described it best: "The sad thing is, I like it!"

And Stephen describes it even bester: "The perfect gift to give a child or grandchild for their high school or college graduation. Also Father's Day. Also, other times."

Stephen Colbert and Tom Hanks will donate 100% of the money they receive for the reading of this audio recording to U.S. Vets (United States Veterans Initiative).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Stephen Colbert was The Daily Show's longest-running and most diverse correspondent. In addition to his role as Senior Political Correspondent he was one of the hosts of "Even Stephven," a point-counterpoint assault featuring co-correspondent Steve Carell, and the host of "This Week in God," in which he reported on all things theological with the assistance of the "God Machine."

His personality, insight and overall rightness could only lead to The Colbert Report, a half-hour nightly platform for him to give his take on the issues of the day, and, more importantly, to tell you why everyone else's take is just plain wrong. The show has been hugely successful.

LET'S GET COZY! ALLERGIC TO DEATH: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:01 PM by Unknown
GIVEAWAY ENDED
ALLERGIC TO DEATH
A Gourmet De-Lite Mystery #1
BY PEG COCHRAN
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Preparing calorie-conscious meals for the dieters of Woodstone, Connecticut, Gigi Fitzgerald knows a cheater when she sees one. And when murder is on the menu, she's ready to get the skinny on whodunit...

Business is looking up for Gigi's Gourmet De-Lite, thanks to her newest client, restaurant reviewer Martha Bernhardt. Martha has the clout to put Gigi's personal meal plans on everyone's lips. But instead of dropping a few pounds, Martha drops dead from a severe peanut allergy...right after eating one of Gigi's signature dishes.

When the distractingly debonair Detective Mertz identifies traces of peanut oil in Martha's last meal, Gigi suddenly finds her diet catering business on the chopping block. Now she'll have to track down who tampered with her recipe before her own goose is cooked.

Includes delicious--and healthy--recipes!

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GIGI FITZGERALD, MAIN CHARACTER IN ALLERGIC TO DEATH:
Favorite sinful indulgence:  Strawberry Twizzlers.  I can’t resist them.
Favorite saying: I have an Irish temper and an Italian attitude.
Favorite healthy food:  Avocados.  I love them sliced on a turkey or tuna sandwich.
Habit you’d most like to break: Blushing!   It’s hard keeping a poker face when that face is bright red!
Dream for the future:  To fall in love again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Peg grew up in a New Jersey suburb about 25 miles outside of New York City.  After college, she moved to the City where she managed an art gallery owned by the son of the artist Henri Matisse.  When her first daughter, Francesca, arrived, the new family moved back to the New Jersey suburbs where her second daughter, Annabelle, was born.

After her husband died, Peg remarried and her new husband took a job in Grand Rapids, MI where they now live (on exile from NJ, she likes to joke).  Peg managed to segue from the art world to marketing and is now the manager of marketing communications for a company that provides services to seniors.

Her greatest love though has always been writing-particularly mysteries!  She has two cozy mystery series debuting from Berkley Prime Crime-the Gourmet De-Lite series set in Connecticut and featuring Gigi Fitzgerald who provides gourmet diet meals to a select group of clients, and the Sweet Nothings Vintage Lingerie series, written as Meg London, set in Paris, TN with Emma Taylor who finds murder and mayhem in this quiet country town.

As for pets - she has a schizophrenic cat (really) named Frazzle and a Westhighland White Terrier, Reggie, who is desperately in need of losing a few pounds.  But you know what they say:  If your dog is overweight, it means YOU aren't getting enough exercise!

When she's not writing, Peg can usually be found cooking, which she loves.  When asked to bring a dish to a potluck she invariably opts to bring dessert - partly because she loves making sweet dishes and partly because she and her husband always manage to be late so there's no point in putting them in charge of the appetizer!

Peg loves connecting with readers and other writers so feel free to drop her an email! And be sure to visit her other website for Meg London.

WATCH FOR THE NEXT PEG COCHRAN/MEG LONDON MYSTERY COMING SOON:

BEAUTIFUL BOY: A GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:01 PM by Unknown
 GIVEAWAY ENDED
BEAUTIFUL BOY
 A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction
 BY DAVID SHEFF

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Sheff’s story is a first: a teenager’s addiction from the parent’s point of view—a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope. Before meth, Sheff’s son Nic was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets.

At its heart Beautiful Boy is an amazingly honest and exquisitely written account of a family’s torturous journey through addiction. It raises questions that reflect the fears of every parent: Where does one’s responsibility to a loved one end? How—and when—should a parent know whether his or her child is substance abusing? And how does a family recover from the wounds afflicted by addiction and get on with their lives? David Sheff has written a powerful and moving family portrait that will resonate soundly with all readers and is sure to become a classic.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
David Sheff is the author of Beautiful Boy, based on his article, “My Addicted Son,” which appeared in the New York Times Magazine. The article won a special award from the American Psychological Association for “outstanding contribution to the understanding of addiction.” Beautiful Boy, a number-1 New York Times Best Seller, was named the Best Nonfiction Book of 2009 by Entertainment Weekly and it won first place in the 2009 Barnes and Noble Discover Award in nonfiction.  Sheff's research and writing about this subject is ongoing;he contributed to HBO's Addiction: Why Can’t They Just Stop and is writing a new book about mental health and addiction care in America. In 2009, Sheff was named to the Time 100, Time Magazine's list of the World's Most Influential People.

Along with The New York Times Magazine, Sheff has also written for The New York Times, Wired, Playboy, Fortune, Rolling Stone, Outside, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, Esquire and Observer Magazine in England, Foreign Literature in Russia, and Playboy (Shueisha) in Japan. He has conducted seminal interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, nuclear physicist Ted Taylor, Congressman Barney Frank, Steve Jobs, Tom Hanks, Betty Friedan, Keith Haring, Jack Nicholson, Carl Sagan, Salman Rushdie, OJ Simpson, Fareed Zakaria, and others. He also wrote an award-winning documentary about John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, and a radio special about Harper Lee’sTo Kill a Mockingbird, both for National Public Radio. He wrote and edited Heart Play: Unfinished Dialogue, which won a Grammy Award nomination for Best Spoken Word Recording of 1984.

Sheff is the author of Game Over, published in a dozen languages, called “the bible of the videogame industry” by The Wall Street Journal, and “beguiling” and  "irresistible. . . almost as hypnotic as a successful video game" by the New York Times. Author Gore Vidal said that in China Dawn, Sheff’s book about the Internet revolution in China, “China, at the turn of the century, comes alive.” All We Are Saying, based on Sheff’s interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1980, was a Literary Guild Selection book. Charles Champlin, Arts Editor of the Los Angeles Times, wrote: "David Sheff's sympathetic questions evoked so much of the Beatle past and of Lennon's intellectual past and present and future plans that the interview would hardly have been less engrossing and important even it if were not illuminated by tragedy."

Sheff  graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives with his family in Point Reyes Station, California.

PRAISE FOR BEAUTIFUL BOY:
"This is a brilliant, harrowing, heart-breaking, fascinating book, full of beautiful moments and hard-fought wisdom. This book is going to save a lot of lives, and help heal a lot of hearts. I absolutely could not put it down: I read it straight through in two nights. "
--Ann Lamott, author of Grace (Eventually), Bird by Bird, and Operating Instructions??

"Sheff's story is honest, reflective and deeply moving. Sadly, it is a story all too relevant for our troubled times. When one of us tells the truth, he makes it easier for all of us to open our hearts to our own pain and to that of others. That’s ultimately what Beautiful Boy is about: truth and healing."
--Mary Pipher, Author of Writing to Change the World and Reviving Ophelia

"Those of us who love an addict -- or are addicts ourselves -- will find BEAUTIFUL BOY a revelation. David Sheff knows all too well what must be endured with faith, and his extraordinary book describes it better than anything else I've read. While painfully candid, BEAUTIFUL BOY is equally optimistic and powerful."
-- Martin Sheen, actor
