WE ARE WATER by WALLY LAMB: A REVIEW AND "QUICKIE" GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
WE ARE WATER
A Novel
BY WALLY LAMB

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In middle age, Annie Oh—wife, mother, and outsider artist—has shaken her family to its core. After twenty-seven years of marriage and three children, Annie has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy, cultured, confident Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her professional success.
Annie and Viveca plan to wed in the Oh family's hometown of Three Rivers, Connecticut, where gay marriage has recently been legalized. But the impending wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora's box of toxic secrets—dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs' lives.

We Are Water is an intricate and layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs—nonconformist Annie; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest Oh. Set in New England and New York during the first years of the Obama presidency, it is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.
With humor and breathtaking compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience in vivid and unforgettable characters struggling to find hope and redemption in the aftermath of trauma and loss.We Are Water is vintage Wally Lamb—a compulsively readable, generous, and uplifting masterpiece that digs deep into the complexities of the human heart to explore the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Wally Lamb is the author of the New York Times and national bestseller The Hour I First Believed, as well as the novels She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True, both #1 New York Times bestsellers and Oprah's Book Club selections. He lives in Connecticut with his family.

"FUN STUFF" ABOUT AUTHOR WALLY LAMB:
This Q&A was taken from the HarperCollins website "FUN STUFF" section on Wally Lamb.

My favorite item of clothing is…
my brown, broken-in “Rheingold Beer” ball cap and a raggedy sweatshirt my wife wants to toss.

My greatest achievement so far is…
fatherhood.
If I couldn't be a writer, I would be...
a mail carrier or a shrink.

My one wish would be…
to put an end to poverty.

My best quality is…
empathy.

MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
Considering Wally Lamb’s SHE’S COME UNDONE is one of my top five favorite all time books, I always look forward to reading his new books. Some I like more than others but in WE ARE WATER, I found another gem from this author. I am always amazed, as I was with SHE’S COME UNDONE, how Mr. Lamb writes female characters so effectively. This is not to say that other authors don’t also do it, but there is just something about how Wally Lamb can get inside a woman’s head and write her story that grabs me.

WE ARE WATER tells the story of Annie and Orion Oh and their family. Each member of the family is dealing with secrets of their own and issues from their past and present that must be resolved. With the Ohs being married well over 20 years, it is a shock when Annie decides to leave Orion to carry on a romantic relationship with her art dealer, Viveca. This relationship eventually leads to marriage plans.

From this main point, Lamb infuses everyone else’s story into the current time surrounding Annie and Viveca’s wedding. Readers will learn the history and secrets that go into developing each character. With WE ARE WATER including topics ranging from homophobia to racism, to tragedy and violence, as well as abuse and alcoholism, readers must process it all. It helps that the narrative is told through the different characters’ point of view by alternating them through the chapters. Using flashbacks, readers discover additional information about Annie, and thus the narrative draws you in as readers become entrenched in each dilemma. Annie’s story, by far the most complex and devastating, is at the center of the Oh family’s lives.

As the story comes together and secrets are revealed, I found myself so invested in the narrative that I didn’t mind the time it took to read this book. This isn’t an “end of summer, chick lit for the beach” book, but it is certainly a novel that will leave you with a sense of accomplishment and the comprehension as to where the title comes from. I highly recommend WE ARE WATER for book clubs as there is much to discuss and reflect upon.

SEPTEMBER 11 : HONOR, REMEMBER, REUNITE

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown

“May the lives remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance.”
These words are part of the mission statement of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center in New York City. As the nation and world mark the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, BOOKIN' WITH BINGO shares the sentiments of the 9/11 Memorial and calls upon readers to make Sept. 11, 2013 a day of commemoration.

Take a moment to remember and honor the thousands of innocent men, women, and children murdered by terrorists in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001.

Thank your local first responders for their dedication to protecting your community.

Remember the many Americans who have served and are currently serving in our nation's military—many of whom enlisted as a response to the 9/11 attacks.

Let us come together this 9/11 to honor, remember and reunite. For more information from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, visit 911memorial.org.

"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11." -President Barack Obama

LET'S GET COZY! A SKELETON IN THE FAMILY: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
 A SKELETON IN THE FAMILY
A Family Skeleton Mystery
BY LEIGH PERRY
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Most families have skeletons in their closets...

Moving back into her parents’ house with her teenage daughter had not been Georgia Thackery’s “Plan A.” But when she got a job at the local college, it seemed the sensible thing to do. So she settled in and began reconnecting with old friends.

Including Sid. Sid is the Thackery family’s skeleton. He’s lived in the house as long as Georgia can remember, although no one, including Sid, knows exactly where he came from and how he came to be a skeleton.

Sid walks, he talks, he makes bad jokes, he tries to keep Georgia’s dog from considering him a snack. And he manages to persuade Georgia to let him leave the house. But when she takes him to an anime convention—disguised as a skeleton, of course—he sees a woman who triggers memories of his past.

Now he is determined to find out how he died—with Georgia’s help. But their investigation may uncover a killer who’s still alive and well and bad to the bone...

LET'S GET COZY! BUFFALO BILL'S DEAD NOW: A PREVIEW AND QUICKIE GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
 BUFFALO BILL'S DEAD NOW
A Wind River Mystery
BY MARGARET COEL
ABOUT THE BOOK:
In the latest Wind River novel from New York Timesbestselling author Margaret Coel, Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and Father John O’Malley are witnesses to history—and murder...

After more than 120 years, the regalia worn by Arapaho Chief Black Heart in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show were supposed to be returned to his people. But the cartons containing the relics were empty when they arrived at the Arapaho Museum. Collector Trevor Pratt had them shipped from Germany and believes thieves must have stolen them en route.

Vicki and Father John suspect Trevor knows more about the theft than he’s telling—a suspicion that’s confirmed when they find him murdered in his home. To find the killer, they must first uncover the truth about a blood feud between two Arapaho families—and the original theft of Black Heart’s possessions dating back more than a century...

AN EXCERPT FROM BUFFALO BILL'S DEAD NOW:
Prologue

"I hear you're calling yourself Trevor these days." The big man with bushy, steel-gray hair and big hands with stubby fingers folded himself into the booth across from Trevor Pratt. A skinny guy, Hispanic, black hair slicked back from a horse-like face took the edge of the bench. The skinny guy looked familiar. Trevor bit off a chunk of hamburger and took his time washing it down with beer. Music had started thumping from the speakers tacked up on the walls of the Empire Lounge, and two or three couples sauntered out onto the dance floor and began gyrating. Lights from traffic on Federal Boulevard flashed in the pane glass window alongside the booth.

Trevor set the beer bottle on the table, leaned back and stared at the big man. Hol Chambers hadn't changed much in the last dozen years. A little paunch, a few extra pounds, the vein-traced nose and leathery look of a drinker, but not the kind of change that mattered, that went to the heart of things, not a change in character. Trevor could see it in the man's eyes.

"Do I know your friend?"

"Raphael here? Raphael Luna. We partnered up a few times since you took that trip to jail. Tried to catch up with you that one time in Colorado."

"How'd you find me here?"

The big man emitted a laugh that sounded like a truck motor starting up. "Come on, Trevor. You know the network keeps track of business associates. Let's just say you were spotted at an auction, going by the name of Pratt. I started following your success." He shook his head, as if he had thought of a tragedy that might have been avoided. "Nothing compared to what might've been yours."

"What do you want?"...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Margaret Coel is the New York Times best-selling author of the acclaimed Wind River mystery series set among the Arapahos on Wyoming's Wind River Reservation and featuring Jesuit priest Father John O'Malley and Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden.

The novels have received wide recognition. They have been on the bestseller lists of numerous newspapers, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News. Five novels have received the Colorado Book Award. THE SPIRIT WOMAN received the Willa Cather Award for Best Novel of the West and was a finalist for the Western Writers of America's Spur Award for Best Novel.

She is a native Coloradan who hails from a pioneer Colorado family. The West — the mountains, plains, and vast spaces — are in her bones, she says. She moved out of Colorado on two occasions — to attend Marquette University and to spend a couple of years in Alaska. Both times she couldn't wait to get back.
She writes in a small study in her home on a hillside in Boulder. The window frames a view of the Rocky Mountains and the almost-always blue sky. A herd of deer are usually grazing just outside, and one summer a couple of years ago, a mountain lion made its home closeby.

"Every day,"she says, "I drink in the West."
