MONUMENT TO THE DEAD
A Museum Mystery
BY SHEILA CONNOLLY
ABOUT THE BOOK:
As president of the Pennsylvania Antiquarian Society in Philadelphia, Nell Pratt relies on the generosity of philanthropists. But when someone starts killing benefactors, it’s Nell’s turn to come to their aid...

When Nell reads the obituary of a former board member, Adeline Harrison, she makes a mental note to send flowers and doesn’t think twice about it—until FBI agent James Morrison shares his suspicions about the nature of Adeline’s death. It turns out that a number of other members of the local cultural community have died in the last few months, under similar circumstances.

Soon Nell uncovers what seems to be a plot to rid Philadelphia of harmless, elderly philanthropists—but why? If she can figure out the killer’s motive, she has a chance of stopping the misanthropic murderer before another do-gooder is done in..

MEG GARDINER'S THE SHADOW TRACER: A PREVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown
    GIVEAWAY ENDED
    THE SHADOW TRACER
    BY MEG GARDINER

    ABOUT THE BOOK:
An explosive stand-alone thriller from the Edgar Award–winning writer Stephen King called “the next suspense superstar”

Can a person ever really disappear for good by going off the grid? And what happens when vanishing is no longer an option?

Sarah Keller is a single mother to five-year-old Zoe, living quietly in Oklahoma. She’s also a skip tracer, an expert in tracking people who’ve gone on the lam to avoid arrest, prosecution, or debt—pinpointing their locations to bring them to justice.

When a school bus accident sends Zoe to the ER, their quiet life explodes. Zoe’s medical tests reveal what Sarah has been hiding: Zoe is not her daughter. Zoe’s biological mother—Sarah’s sister, Beth—was murdered shortly after the child’s birth. And Zoe’s father is missing and presumed dead.

With no way to prove her innocence, Sarah must abandon her carefully constructed life and go on the run. Chased by cops, federal agents, and the group responsible for Beth’s murder, Sarah embarks on a desperate journey. Can her knowledge as a skip tracer help her stay off the grid, remain one step ahead of her pursuers, and find a way to save her daughter?

Meg Gardiner is acclaimed for her richly drawn characters, propulsive plotting, relentless suspense, and shocking twists. The Shadow Tracer delivers on those fronts and more.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Meg Gardiner was born in Oklahoma and raised in Santa Barbara, California. She graduated from Stanford University and Stanford Law School.

She practiced law in Los Angeles and taught writing at the University of California Santa Barbara. She’s a former collegiate cross-country runner and a three time Jeopardy! champion. She divides her time between London and Austin, Texas.

China Lake won the 2009 Edgar award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Paperback Original.

The Dirty Secrets Club won the Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award for Best Procedural Novel of 2008.

The Nightmare Thief won the 2012 Audie Award for Thriller/Suspense audiobook of the year.

    PRAISE FOR THE SHADOW TRACER:
Gardiner’s latest stand-alone revisits the story of Thelma and Louise, with Thelma played by a professional skip tracer and Louise by a refugee from kindergarten… Gardiner (Ransom River, 2012, etc.) will keep you up half the night with nonstop action and nary a pause for breath.”--Kirkus, starred review

“Edgar-winner Gardiner’s second stand-alone (after Ransom River) boasts another of the strong female characters she’s known for and enough pulse-pounding action to satisfy the most avid thriller fan… packed with surprises and harrowing escapes.”
    --Publishers Weekly

“Heart-stopping… Edgar Award–winner Gardiner (Ransom River, 2012) steadily ratchets up the suspense in this taut stand-alone tale.”
    --Booklist

“The novels that can be set into the ‘fantastic’ category may be slim, but this standalone mystery by Meg Gardiner certainly found a place in that elite group.”

AUDIO BOOK WEEK! THE ENGAGEMENTS: A REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Posted on 9:00 PM by Unknown

    WELCOME TO BOOKIN' WITH BINGO'S
    AUDIO BOOK DAY!
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S
    AUDIO BOOK CHOICE....

    GIVEAWAY ENDED
    THE ENGAGEMENTS
    Read By Kimberly Farr
    BY J. COURTNEY SULLIVAN

    ABOUT THE BOOK:
From the New York Times best-selling author of Commencement and Maine comes a gorgeous, sprawling novel about marriage—about those who marry in a white heat of passion, those who marry for partnership and comfort, and those who live together, love each other, and have absolutely no intention of ruining it all with a wedding.

Evelyn has been married to her husband for forty years--forty years since he slipped off her first wedding ring and put his own in its place. Delphine knows both sides of love--the ecstatic, glorious highs of seduction, and the bitter, spiteful fury that descends when it's over. James, a paramedic who works the night shift, knows his wife's family thinks she could have done better; while Kate, partnered with Dan for ten years, has seen every kind of wedding--from the Nantucket beach wedding to the Irish castle wedding--and has vowed never, ever, to have one of her own.

As these lives and marriages unfold in surprising ways, we meet Frances Gerety, a young advertising copywriter in 1947. Frances is working on the De Beers campaign and she needs a signature line, so, one night before bed, she scribbles a phrase on a scrap of paper: “A Diamond Is Forever.” And that line changes everything.

A rich, layered, exhilarating novel spanning nearly a hundred years,
The Engagements captures four wholly unique marriages, while tracing the story of diamonds in America, and the way—for better or for worse—these glittering stones have come to symbolize our deepest hopes for everlasting love.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
    J. Courtney Sullivan is the author of the New York Times best-selling novel Commencement. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Chicago Tribune, New York, Elle, Glamour, Allure, and Men’s Vogue, among others. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

    AN EXCERPT FROM THE ENGAGEMENTS:
    1947

Frances poured the last bitter remains of the coffeepot into her cup. The small kitchen table was covered in paper: layouts, copies of confidential reports, lousy ideas she had scrapped hours ago, and good ones, already published in Look, Vogue, The Saturday Evening Post, Life, and Harper’s Bazaar, to remind her that she had done it before and could do it again.

For once, the apartment building was silent. Usually, from off in some distant corner she could hear a baby crying, a couple arguing, a toilet flushing. But it was past three a.m. The revelers had long been asleep, and the milkmen weren’t yet awake.

Her roommate had gone to bed around ten— at the sight of her standing there in her nightgown and curlers, Frances was overcome with professional jealousy, even though Ann was only a secretary in a law office, who would spend tomorrow the same way she spent every day, fetching coffee and taking dictation.

    PRAISE FOR THE ENGAGEMENTS:
“A perceptive portrait . . . In Sullivan’s easy, unadorned style, The Engagements is a delightful marriage of cultural research and literary entertainment . . . Sullivan handles all the details elegantly, and the situations are surprisingly distinct . . . For all her sharp wit and insight into the agony of failed relationships, Sullivan’s no cynic. The novel’s final wedding transcends the craziness and the extravagance and the bickering. Against all odds, it represents something genuinely eternal about the love between two people.”—Ron Charles, The Washington Post

“The Engagements is a rollicking, entertaining read and a thought-provoking one too. Several of the characters’ voices have stayed in my head, and even days after putting it down I am left with a sturdy, hopeful sense of the fundamental goodwill of people and the abiding power of love . . . [I] am certain it will be one of this summer’s big hits.”
    —Lindsey Mead, Huffington Post

“The best-selling author of Commencement and Maine has written her most ambitious novel yet.”
    —Entertainment Weekly

“A seamless tapestry . . . Sullivan is a keen observer of people and how they morph over time, either being softened by the years or made more brittle by strife.”
    —Bronwyn Miller, BookReporter.com

“[Sullivan] threads her story with the glitter of diamonds . . . a tale that sweeps across varied emotional landscapes.”
    —New York Daily News

“This novel’s concept is as shiny as a diamond itself.”
    —Glamour

“Sullivan has written an intricate, beautifully timed novel, so delicious in its gradual unfolding that readers will want to reread it immediately to enjoy the fully realized ties.”
    —Beth Andersen, Library Journal

“Satisfying . . . At each stage of the game, the engagement ring has a different meaning.”
—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Delving into the allure of ‘for better or worse,’ Sullivan’s novel starts with Frances, an unmarried copywriter who coins the ‘A Diamond Is Forever’ slogan, then follows four couples to the altar. Frank, but fun.”
    —Good Housekeeping Summer Beach Roundup

“The author of Maine and Commencement returns with a sprawling tale about marriage, its meaning, its importance and whether or not a diamond really is forever.”
    —Ashley Ross, Marie Claire

“The author of Commencement and Maine threads her story with the glitter of diamonds . . . It’s a tale that sweeps across varied emotional landscapes.”
—Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News

“The bestselling author of Maine and Commencement opens her third novel with the tale of Frances Gerety, the real-life ad copywriter who coined ‘A diamond is forever’ for De Beers.  It’s the perfect springboard for Sullivan’s story, which follows four couples as they navigate the shifting terrain of love and marriage.”
    —People Magazine

“This sprawling novel about marriage spans nearly 100 years and focuses on four couples, as well as a young single copywriter who coins the ad slogan ‘Diamonds Are Forever,’ which resonates through the decades.”
    —Cathleen Schine, Los Angeles Times

    MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:

Having liked COMMENCEMENT so much, I was not surprised that I enjoyed J. Courtney Sullivan’s latest best seller, THE ENGAGEMENTS. Sullivan gives readers an unusually scripted narrative in which a true story lead her to create THE ENGAGEMENTS. An advertising agency came up with the now popular “diamonds are forever“ phrase, thus initially signifying engagements following World War II. Based on the true story of Frances Gerety, a copywriter for an ad agency, comes that well-known diamond ring advertisement. THE ENGAGEMENTS has Sullivan writing stories woven around the one engagement ring Gerety was inspired by. With her marvelous writing technique, the diamond ring connection not only helps to tell, but also to link the other stories. Each story is representative of the time period it is set in and as THE ENGAGEMENTS goes on, readers will start to realize how the people and couples relate to each other. Just when one might think they are reading a book of thematic short stories, Sullivan flawlessly draws all the tales together.

The stories range from the 1920s when a Boston matron named Evelyn Pearsall looks upon the ring as a sad memory of her doomed love. Having married her college sweetheart, only to stand by as he died of an automobile accident, the last thing Evelyn thought was that there was another person who would come along to share her grief and her love.

To the 1980s we meet James, a down and out rock musician, who also works as an EMT but doesn’t make enough money to give his family what he knows they deserve. The last straw for him just might be when his wife is attacked and her engagement ring is stolen. How can James ever make that up to her?

While following 9/11, Delphine has settled into a secure, if not passionate, marriage with her business partner, Henri. In her 40s, Delphine never remotely expected to find the things missing in her marriage in a younger man who she just can’t resist. And then there is Kate, currently living in New York, and totally against engagement rings and everything wedding! To her it represents consumerism at its best, using the poor African workers to mine those diamonds! What was the big deal with huge weddings and all the trappings? She and boyfriend Dan have a young daughter named Ava and are forced to go along with this wedding nightmare as her family “celebrates” a cousin’s wedding to his partner. What was the relevance of such a ceremony and so much waste, she thought?

And with all these stories playing out and then coming together to the great wonder of this reader, J. Courtney Sullivan once again shows her amazing talent as a writer and storyteller. THE ENGAGEMENTS is filled with twists and turns and so many “a-ha” moments that is makes for a perfect book club discussion. Find a group if you don’t belong to one as you will surely want to talk about the people you meet in THE ENGAGEMENTS!

    AUDIOBOOK WEEK!
I AM EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE TODAY'S
    AUDIO BOOK CHOICE....

    GIVEAWAY ENDED
    TELL MY SONS
    A Father’s Last Letters
BY LT. COL. MARK M. WEBER
    Read by the Author
    ABOUT THE BOOK:
When he was diagnosed with cancer and given four months to live, Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber began a letter of advice to his three sons. That letter became Tell My Sons, a collection of lessons on encouragement, empowerment, and inspiration.

At the height of his career, at the age of 38, Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. Given four months to live, he began to write a letter to his three boys to impart the lessons that living--and dying-- taught him about courage and fear, challenge and comfort, words and actions, pride and humility, seriousness and humor, and a never-ending search for new ideas and inspiration.

Over time that letter became this audiobook. And it's not just for his sons. It's for everyone who could use the best advice a dying hero has to offer.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber was born and raised in Minnesota. He has served a total of twenty-three years in the U.S. Army, with five years as an enlisted soldier in the Minnesota National Guard and nineteen years on active duty as a commissioned officer. He has been stationed throughout the United States, at the Pentagon, in Saudi Arabia, and in Iraq. He is a distinguished alumnus of Minnesota State University, holds master’s degrees in history from Jacksonville State University in Alabama and public policy management from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and has served as a policy fellow at the University of Minnesota. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Combat Action Badge. Weber lives in Rosemount, Minnesota, with his wife, Kristin, and their three sons.

PLEASE take time that you won't regret to watch the longer video of Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber giving his powerful speech and singing with his son at an Army Birthday address at the Minnesota History Center in Saint Paul on June 14, 2012. You can find it on YouTube HERE.
LISTEN TO AN EXCERPT OF TELL MY SONS:
Click on the audiobook below to go to the Random House page where you can hear an excerpt from this audiobook! You will need to click on the "Audiobook" tab to get to the excerpt.
    PRAISE FOR TELL MY SONS:
“A gift to us all . . . Every page exudes courage, honesty, and an indomitable spirit. Mark Weber’s story has touched me in such a profound way.”—Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie

“Tell My Sons is a deeply moving, personal account of a soldier’s journey into an ultimate frontier. As I read Mark Weber’s book, I was astonished by its honesty, courage, and discipline. This book offers one of the most profound and detailed descriptions of the strange world of cancer and should be essential reading for all of us who seek to understand that topsy-turvy terrain.”
—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies

“Tell My Sons is one of the most profound and inspirational stories I have ever read. It may have been written for Mark’s children, but it may as well be a treatise for all of us about honest parenting and leadership with character in love, family, faith, and politics. For a man who is facing profound health issues, Mark is doing a remarkable job showing us all how to live with courage and integrity.”
—Walter F. Mondale, former vice president of the United States

“This book is why I have always been proud to call Mark Weber my son. His ability to reach across complex boundaries and write and speak with such depth and beauty makes him a modern day Lawrence of Arabia. Mark’s passion, attitude, and thoughts about life are what is best about America.”
—General Babakir S. Zibari, chief of defense, Republic of Iraq

“A poignant illustration of what being a hero is all about . . . Heroes exemplify invincible courage, character, and perseverance in times of insurmountable odds. Mark embodies these attributes. Tell My Sons will empower the reader with profound lessons of living life with hope and determination.”
—John Elway, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback

    MY THOUGHTS/REVIEW:
My review of TELL MY SONS can go on and on but you only need to read the summary above and the praise given by the celebrated people quoted there as well to know that this is a stellar audiobook…and a book you must read! It will change your life. Much as Randy Pausch’s THE LAST LECTURE made a profound impact on me when I read it a few years back, TELL MY SONS has just added to that feeling and essence. The fact that Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber reads the book himself only adds to the emotional and personal stories he shares. If you come away with nothing else, I hope you will understand all that he felt about humility. He talks in the audiobook about how his personal courage helped him to handle his condition and become a better man, husband, father, and leader. You will laugh and you will cry but trust me, you won’t regret one single moment. May Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber stay in your thoughts and prayers every day as he does in mine. May he rest in peace.
Lt. Col. Mark Weber, who served as a top military officer and chronicled his fight with cancer in the inspirational book "Tell My Sons," died Thursday, June 13, 2013. He was 41....THE MINNESOTA POST, JUNE 13, 2013
